Synthetic Grass

Synthetic grass is a man-made surface of tufted synthetic fibres, built to look and perform like natural grass without the mowing, watering or wear. Multiturf has supplied and installed synthetic grass across South Africa for 20 years, for homes, schools, clubs and resorts.

What Synthetic Grass Is Made Of

Synthetic grass fibres are typically nylon, polyethylene or polypropylene, tufted into a weatherproof backing. Nylon is the most durable and holds its shape best under heavy sports use. Polyethylene is the softest and most realistic-looking, the usual choice for home lawns. Polypropylene is the most affordable, generally used for lighter-use areas.

Residential vs Sports Synthetic Grass

  • Residential synthetic grass has longer, softer blades for a natural lawn look and feel, with minimal or no infill needed.
  • Sports synthetic grass uses a shorter or denser pile matched to the sport, with rubber crumb or silica sand infill and, for competition surfaces, a shock pad underneath.

Why Synthetic Grass

  • No mowing or watering — low maintenance once installed.
  • Holds its colour through KZN’s humidity and Highveld summers alike.
  • Consistent, durable playing surface for sports use.
  • Installed once, lasts for years with basic twice-yearly maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does synthetic grass cost?

Residential synthetic grass costs from R175/m² turf only, or R235/m² to R458/m² supplied and installed, depending on the product. Sports turf starts from R258/m² for cricket and R440/m² for five-a-side football. A 20m² minimum applies to residential orders.

Is synthetic grass the same as artificial grass and astro turf?

Yes. Synthetic grass, artificial grass, artificial turf and astro turf all describe the same kind of product. In South Africa, “astro turf” is usually used for sports surfaces and “artificial grass” for home lawns.

How long does synthetic grass last?

A properly installed sports surface typically lasts 8 to 10 years under regular club or school use. Lighter use and regular brushing help any synthetic lawn last longer.

Does synthetic grass need maintenance?

Synthetic grass is low maintenance. It needs no mowing, watering or fertiliser, but it should be brushed, kept clear of leaves and debris, and checked twice a year.

Does synthetic grass drain after rain?

Yes. The backing is perforated so water drains through to the base underneath, which is why base preparation matters. A properly prepared base keeps the surface usable after heavy rain.

Where do you install synthetic grass?

We install synthetic grass across KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, for homes, schools, clubs, estates and resorts.
