Case Studies
Real projects and real specs from 20 years of sports and residential turf installations across South Africa and Africa. Here are fifteen of them.
iZulu Hotel, Ballito — Putting Green
The hotel’s formal hedge garden was cleared and the base laser levelled for ball roll, ball speed and contouring. It was turned into a multi-hole putting green with a putting turf and 35mm fringe turf design, and the original paved paths run between the greens.
Nkowankowa Sports Facility — Tzaneen
Four 20m x 40m futsal pitches in 40mm XT football turf and three 16m x 32m netball courts in OVAL sports turf for the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, with brick perimeter walls, netting and floodlights. Completed in 2015 and still in use.
Hartley Road School — Three Five-a-Side Pitches
Old tennis courts turned into three five-a-side pitches with lime-green brick rebound walls, full netting and floodlights. Built in 2014; the original turf lasted 8 years before we replaced it, and the venue is still running.
Durban Arena — Five-a-Side Football Pitches
Two five-a-side football pitches totalling 1,236m². Five-a-side turf takes heavy foot traffic in a small area, so the system was chosen for pile strength and secure seams, with consistent ball roll and footing across both pitches. The pitches are in use every day.
Eden College — Multifunctional School Pitch
Eden College wanted hockey, football and basketball on one surface. Multiturf installed a multifunctional sports turf with a click basketball system, so the school runs three sports on a single pitch and avoids building a separate court for each.
Empangeni High School — Tennis, Netball & Basketball Courts
The school’s ageing hard courts were resurfaced with 2,000m² of monofilament turf and a basketball click system. The courts now carry tennis, netball and basketball, and are used for PE, matches and break times in all weather.
Umhlali School — One Pitch for Four Sports
Umhlali School needed one field to carry its full sports programme. A 13mm multifunctional synthetic turf was installed so cricket, hockey, football and basketball can all be played on the same surface, which suits schools without the space or budget for a pitch per sport.
Orient Islamic School — Football & Multifunctional Courts
Football and multifunctional courts built on Multiturf’s 40mm sand and rubber infill football system. The infill gives traction and shock absorption, and the courts are used for football and general PE throughout the school day.
Zimbali — Resort Playground & Football Pitch
Multiturf installed playground turf at Zimbali Coastal Resort and a separate 1,000m² football pitch for Zimbali-ZEMA. Playground turf is built for cushioning underfoot and football turf for ball performance, so each area got a different build spec and infill.

Curro Schools — 18 Playgrounds Nationwide
Multiturf has installed artificial grass playgrounds at 18 Curro Schools campuses around the country. Playground turf gives pre-primary and junior pupils a clean, soft surface under play equipment, with no mud or dust after rain.
Stella Football Club — Five-a-Side Pitch
A 1,624m² five-a-side football pitch built from bare ground: base levelled and compacted, turf laid and line-marked, and the pitch fenced with netting. Used for five-a-side games and club training.
Glenwood Preparatory School — Mini Hockey Astro
A 700m² mini hockey astro with side boards and extra line markings, sized for prep school hockey and used for other sports and PE.
Aga Khan Academy — Kenya
A fenced, line-marked artificial turf sports pitch for the Aga Khan Academy in Kenya, used for football, other sports and PE.
Warri National Stadium — Nigeria
A 9,000m² football turf installation at Warri National Stadium, one of Multiturf’s largest projects outside South Africa.
Sunderland Football Academy — Tanzania
12,000m² of football turf for the Sunderland Football Academy in Tanzania, giving the academy all-weather training pitches for daily use.
Olympic Committee Hockey Pitch — Zambia
A full-size 5,700m² hockey pitch for the Olympic Committee in Zambia. Competition hockey needs a fast, even ball roll across the whole pitch, so base preparation and shock pad work matter as much as the turf.
