What We Build

Artificial Grass for Schools

Artificial grass for schools is hard-wearing synthetic turf for sports fields, multi-sport courts and playgrounds that can be used every day in any weather. Multiturf has installed school sports surfaces and playgrounds across South Africa for 20 years, including 18 playgrounds for Curro Schools.

Why Schools Choose Artificial Grass

  • Pupils can play every day, including after rain, so fewer fixtures and PE lessons are cancelled.
  • No watering, which matters for schools facing water restrictions and rising municipal bills.
  • Low maintenance — no mowing, fertiliser or re-seeding, and no worn goal-mouths or bare patches.
  • An even surface with no holes, stones or roots, which lowers the risk of trips and twisted ankles.
  • One multifunctional pitch can replace separate grass fields and hard courts where space is tight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is artificial grass safe for school children?

Yes. School turf systems use non-toxic polyethylene fibres with rubber or sand infill, and play areas can be laid over a shock pad to soften falls. The surface stays even all year, so there are no holes, mud patches or exposed roots for children to trip on.

How much does artificial grass for a school cost?

Turf-only guide prices start from R398/m² for multifunctional sports court turf, R440/m² for football and R258/m² for cricket. Playgrounds and full sports fields are priced per project, because base preparation, shock pad and site access all affect the final cost. Multiturf gives schools a full written quote after a site visit.

Can one artificial surface be used for several sports?

Yes. A multifunctional turf pitch can carry hockey, football, cricket, netball and basketball on one surface, with line markings for each code and a click basketball system where needed. Eden College, Umhlali School and Empangeni High School all use this setup.

How long does artificial grass last at a school?

A properly installed school sports surface typically lasts 8 to 10 years under daily PE, break-time and match use. Lifespan depends on how heavily it is used and how well it is brushed and topped up with infill.

Does artificial grass need maintenance?

Artificial grass is low maintenance. It needs no mowing, watering or fertiliser, but it should be brushed regularly, kept clear of leaves and debris, and have its infill levels checked. A professional maintenance visit once or twice a year keeps a school pitch playing well.

Can artificial grass be installed during the school term?

Yes. Most school pitches and playgrounds are installed in a few weeks, and work can be planned around the school holidays or fenced off from pupils during term time.
