Going with artificial turf is a big step in the longevity of your lawn, but there are many things to consider. Here are the pros and cons of artificial turf.

Keyword(s): pros and cons of artificial turf

Artificial grass has been riding the crest of a popularity wave in recent times.

And, it doesn’t simply have supporters. It has raving fans.

For some people, it’s the eco-friendly nature that instantly appeals. For others, it’s all about having the lush appearance of a perfectly manicured lawn with the convenience of synthetic grass.

But, let’s delve a little deeper. What exactly are the pros and cons of artificial turf?

There’s no doubt that when you’re looking to give your lawn a much-needed makeover, there’s a lot to consider.

In this article, we’re taking a closer look at synthetic grass.

The Pros and Cons of Artificial Turf

1. The Look

Here’s something we can all agree on. An exquisite green lawn is a thing of immense beauty.

It almost transcends description.

With artificial turf, that beauty is taken into high gear. With synthetic grass, achieving true perfection is possible.

Synthetic turf is available in multiple shades. It’s also offered in a range of different textures and it comes in different blade lengths.

In terms of the pros and cons of artificial turf, this kind of pro enables you to have the lawn of your dreams, all year round.

So, what about the cons?

Some people don’t want the perfect lawn, they want a live one.

And although artificial turf looks and feels like real grass, some people prefer to have real grass.

After all, variety is the spice of life.

2. The Convenience

When we’re talking about the pros and cons of artificial turf, nothing speaks more powerfully than the ultra convenience that synthetic turf provides.

Beauty, yes. But convenience? Artificial turf takes convenience to an entirely new level.

Fully UV stabilized, your artificial grass, will last between 12-15 years. And yes, that includes all the wear and tear of normal use – dogs, kids, sports games, etc. It will always be accompanied by a hassle free warranty too.

But, more than that, with artificial turf you can completely forget about mowing the lawn. All that time spent watering your lawn and feeding it?

All gone!

The upkeep of artificial turf is so minimal it’s almost too good to be true.

What about the cons?

Some people really enjoy being ultra hands on with their garden. If you like to constantly maintain your lawn, artificial grass may not be the right choice for you.
3. The Environment

When you have natural grass, the constant upkeep can be very expensive. It costs you your precious time as well.

One of the major cons associated with natural grass is its daily or weekly need for treatment. We’re talking fertilizers and pesticides, among others.

With artificial turf, the use of harmful chemicals and the associated damage to the environment are eradicated for good.

In many ways, the difference between the pros and cons of artificial turf rests in your overall outlook.

Artificial turf supplies perfection and beauty on demand. It offers convenience over constant toil. And, it helps you to be kinder to the environment.

Essentially it offers you choice.

What you do with the choice is of course, entirely up to you.

Step by Step Process for Artificial Turf Installation

Artificial turf installation might seem like something to leave to the pros, but with our easy step by step guide, installing your grass is a piece of cake.

Keyword(s): artificial turf installation

An artificial lawn is a perfect solution to that backyard problem and can give you back the use of your lawn. Instead of dealing with huge, muddy puddles every time it rains, you can enjoy gorgeous, lush grass that’s easy to maintain.

You may have always assumed that artificial turf installation is something that can only be done by the pros. But turns out that with a little preparation, it is possible to DIY the installation of your new grass.

The friendly team at Multiturf have years of experience with installing and caring for artificial turf. We’ve put together this guide to show you that with a little preparation, you can install your Multiturf yourself.

Here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Prepare for Artificial Turf Installation

First, you need to remove any existing grass or turf. You also need to dig down at least 7-9 centimeters and remove the top layer of soil. This will make room for your new base, and you may want to use a rototiller to break up the soil as you dig up your old lawn.

Remove any large plants and existing grass to prevent them from creating an uneven surface once they die.

You also need to spray any existing weeds and grass with weed killer at least two weeks before you plan to lay your new lawn. Use Round-Up or something similar to ensure that all vegetation is dead all the way down to its roots.

Step 2: Install a Waterproof Border

One of the most important parts of your artificial turf installation is installing a waterproof border.

Install a cobblestone edge or metal edging to keep your lawn from separating or slumping. Make sure the border doesn’t sit above the grass level or it may stop the area from draining.

Alternatively, pour concrete around the area for a long-term solution.

Step 3: Protect it From Weeds

The next step is to protect your turf from weeds from growing up through your turf, which would cause it to buckle.

You’ll need to buy a weed blocker, which is a geotextile barrier. Lay the barrier out along the area you’ve excavated, and use a heavy-duty utility knife to cut it to size.

Step 4: Choose your Base Material

Your base material could be sand, decomposed granite, gravel, or rock. You’ll need to fill the excavated area with the material which will improve drainage and help prevent slumping.

If your artificial turf installation will be over a hard surface like concrete, you could use a self-leveling compound or rubber shock pad instead.

Step 5: Work on the Base

Next, you’ll need to grade the base with a landscaping rake. This is when you smooth out all of the base material.

You also need to moisten and compact your chosen base. Use a garden hose to lightly sprinkle your base, and then grab a roller compactor or plate compactor to compact that material down. Aim to drop it by approximately 0.7 centimeters.

Step 6: Roll Out the Artifical Turf

Once the base has dried, you need to unroll the turf and let it regain its shape. Next, measure the area where you’ll be laying out your turf. Grab a partner, and lay each strip of turf over the prepared base.

Try not to drag the turf over your base to avoid disturbing it. You can then cut the turf to fit into each area.
